When the Salinas Valley Fair Board decided it was time to finally replace the original arena they did not cut any corners. SSB Construction and Wade Reese Architects AIA were selected to work closely with the Board in the design and development of two 40,000 sq ft (200’ clear-span/no interior columns) prefabricated structures. Each structure had a raised cupola running the entire length, down the center of each building. One building has a concrete floor while the other, the riding arena, has a dirt floor. One of the most challenging aspects of this project was erecting the “clear-span” main frames with structurally integrated cupola (imagine trying to stand a string of cooked spaghetti). Another huge challenge was completing the project in time for the fair amidst heavy rain and windstorms.
